"Allegories & Landscapes"
Solo exhibition with a selection of recent works.
August 23 - September 15, 2007

Excerpt from the published catalog:
"Allegories
, the most recent series by acclaimed artist Luc Leestemaker, reflect the ever-broadening and deepening quality of his body of work. By using the image of a barge as the conduit for his transcendence into a more lyrical language in the "Voyager" and "Map of the Wind" series, Leestemaker already translated the more methodical landscape process from the European painter's tradition in which he grew up into abstractions. With a new freedom to travel deeper into the abstract process, "Allegories" has now emerged to describe the artist's latest exploration into even more fluid territory and provides a new and exciting reference point between the tangible horizon line and a more abstract interpretation of his landscapes."

Lecture Series

Madison Gallery Artist Lecture Series presents Dutch/American Artist Luc Leestemaker July 27, 2007.

Madison Gallery will host artist Luc Leestemaker as part of the Artist Lecture Series on Friday - July 27, 2007 (6-9 p.m.) at 1020 Prospect in La Jolla, California.  Celebrating the release of his new coffee table book and DVD, and the result of a unique collaboration between the artist and the composer Vincent Ho on a large screen, collectors will have the opportunity to view and acquire his recent works on canvas.

Not unlike other European and Dutch artists, (particularly Willem de Kooning), living and working in the U.S., created a dramatic transition. His stylistic journey would take him from early inspiration by the CoBrA movement; through densely abstract expressionist art compositions; to the current Inner Landscape and Transfigurations Series, which are situated on the borderline of realism and abstraction and inspired both by Mark Rothko and 18th Century Dutch and English landscape painters such as Ruysdael, Turner and Constable. With his contemporary landscapes as a solid foundation, his recent “Voyagers” and “Map of the Wind” Series introduce a new generation of abstract expressionism, in which landscape and abstraction increasingly merge.

The project was executed by Tiffiny Lendrum, of Lendrum Fine Art, in Los Angeles.

Award Winning Composer Vincent Ho

Canadian composer Vincent Ho is currently writing a composition, inspired by paintings of Luc Leestemaker. The composer, who won the prestigious 2005 “Robert Fleming Prize” for most outstanding young Canadian Composer, and the 2004 ASCAP Foundation “Morton Gould Young Composer Award” for his composition “Dragon Realms” has now been commissioned by the Royal Conservatory to write a new composition based on and inspired by Leestemaker’s work, which will be performed at a number of art music festivals throughout China in 2006. Various concerts are planned for Canada and the US as well.

From notes by Vincent Ho to the artist:

"...I am so absolutely thrilled! Your works have been wonderful inspirations for me. As a consequence, I have just completed one movement of my piece inspired by your painting, BIRDSONG No.9. When I initially saw it, I felt a pervasion of youthful optimism; an energetic lyricism colored by tastefully seasoned dissonances. For some reason, I also saw the summation of one journey and the re-awakening of an inner-child; like the end of one phase and the re-embracement of long-lost one. As well, there is a folkloric quality about it that adds to its rustic character. For the music, I responded in a similar vein. The piece is fast and energetic, built on Chinese folk rhythms and sonorities, and seasoned with delicious dissonances to give it that added excitement. It expresses a youthful energitic quality that harkens an earlier musical period of mine; a period when I still viewed music with a child-like sense of wonder and excitement before the realities of life jaded my perspectives. I can't wait for you to hear this...!"
